Reading Assistance Program for Chaoguang Village Schools
Project Origin
Choosing the path of sports changed my life, as well as the fates of many rural youths who worked the fields from dawn to dusk. In those days, my memories of home were of muddy village roads, with the occasional caw of crows echoing through the stillness. By five or six in the evening, it was pitch dark. On weekends, my parents would take the older kids to the market, thirty miles away, to sell corn, potatoes, and pig feed we grew ourselves. They’d return with the essentials for the household. Life was simple, even dull, perhaps even hard, though I was too young to fully grasp what hardship truly meant. The young people in the village, myself included, had no idea what life was like in the cities hundreds of kilometers away. After finishing my daily farm chores to earn work points, I’d happily climb a tall haystack to read Chairman Mao’s quotations and poetry, while admiring the majestic mountains stretching endlessly before me. These mountains, though not very fertile, sustained the whole village.
One day, my teacher came to visit our home and mysteriously pulled me outside. After taking a swig of alcohol, he lowered his voice and said, “The national college entrance exam has been reinstated this year. It’s the first batch of students, and anyone who qualifies can apply. You should give it a try. But think carefully, many schools have high academic requirements, and as a rural kid, you may not compete well with city children. Even if you get in, it might be hard to keep up. But I suggest you try for a sports university. The county often has you represent the local offices in competitions, but the promises of jobs in return for those medals never materialized. It’s time to put that talent to use. This is an opportunity—you should go for it, aim for the best in the country. If you graduate, you’ll have a government job in the city. You won’t have to walk miles to fetch water from the well, and you’ll have rice at every meal. Your children will be able to study in city schools. And if you don’t make it, well, then just come back and work the land; that’s all there is to it.”
Teachers back then were pure and kind, investing their hopes and dreams into students like me. Encouraged by his words, I took the exam and was admitted to Beijing Sport University. When the news spread through the village, people talked of little else. Visitors came with gifts and congratulations. Even the local officials began treating my family more warmly. Two weeks later, I boarded a train bound for Beijing with a quilt I had used for ten years—the only thing my family could give me. My wife, Wenfen, had exchanged 40 pounds of pig feed for a meager 1.23 yuan, and with that I embarked on my educational journey.
Four years later, I turned down a teaching job at a university in Chongqing and returned to Guizhou. My heart was here, with my teachers, the mountains, the potatoes, and the oil-free sour vegetable soup I couldn’t live without. I felt that maybe I could do something for the children in my village. Time flew by, and now in my twilight years, some of my students have become world champions, some have pursued advanced studies at Tsinghua University, and many have entered the sports education field, building families, having children, and developing their own independent views on the world, continually setting and adjusting their life goals.
In 2021, I returned to my hometown with my daughter. The once muddy village roads had become wide, paved highways. The wooden huts were now sturdy concrete houses. Meat and eggs were served at every meal, a testament to the success of the national poverty alleviation program. Reflecting on my career, I realized that sports changed my destiny, but my lack of cultural knowledge caused me to miss many opportunities. Today, whether in cities or rural areas, children face increasingly complex and competitive environments. The rapid development of society and the economy has left many families searching for shortcuts, only to be delayed by them. From the perspective of long-term educational planning, relying solely on the path of sports is no longer sufficient to keep pace with societal progress. A solid foundation in cultural knowledge, the enhancement of comprehensive skills, and a three-pronged approach are the best ways to counter workplace pressures, compete globally, and improve one’s quality of life. Achieving these goals, however, is a vast task—one that will take generations of effort. There is no rushing it.
Currently, only a small percentage of China’s 1.4 billion people receive formal education. Children are the hope for the future, the key force driving social development and scientific progress. In remote, underdeveloped areas, particularly in minority regions, children are even more disadvantaged. I hope to begin with Guizhou, initiating the “Rural Reading Space Co-creation Plan," a project aimed at fostering knowledge enlightenment for rural children in the western regions. We plan to gather children’s books by partnering with urban families and sharing their unused books. Your support and assistance would be greatly appreciated!
